Judo Makiwara by Don Buck

This drawing was made by my teacher, Don Buck in the early 1990’s. This was a makiwara for judo which he used in his training. The device was bolted to the wall and was hinged so that the outer board would swing up and strike the inner board when contact was made. The pad on the outer board was at hip level so that the judoka could enter and "bump" the board with his hip. Sensei said the device developed very powerful throwing technique. After prolonged use he developed callus on his hip from contact with the board.
