What an absolutely outstanding day!

It was my absolute pleasure to welcome over 300 competitors and their families to Christchurch today for the GKR Karate 2025 New Zealand National Championships at Cowles Stadium. It was an day with incredible karate and sportsmanship on display. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it.

I would like to thank a number of people who helped to make this day a success.

Firstly, to the New Zealand Management Team – Renshi Antonie de Bruin, Sensei Hayden Gwynne, Sensei Neil Boddington, and Sensei Cassius Brown; your leadership is what helped to bring everyone together today and create this amazing event.
To the Region 22 Instructor Team; thank you for all your support over the past year in helping me to put this event together.
To all of the officials; it is because of you that this event ran so smoothly and everyone had such an amazing time.
To all the competitors; without you there would be no competition! It is always amazing to see how far you have come since I’ve seen you last, and I can’t wait to see who you’ve become by the next time we are all together.
To all of the families and friends of the competitors; it is your love and support that allow our competitors to do what they do.

Thank you all so much for this amazing day. Without all of you, this event could never have happened!

Warmest regards,
Jessica Patterson
Regional Manager
Christchurch, New Zealand

The event began at 9am with junior teams showcasing great teamwork and enthusiasm. This was followed by the individual junior divisions, where our young competitors demonstrated impressive skill and spirit across all 9 rings.
At midday, the Black Belt Open events took centre stage. In the senior divisions, Chloe Pedley and Andrew Jones took the Kata Gold, and we saw Alex Holmes and Mike Barrett winning gold in Kumite.

The 2025 New South Wales State Championships were held at Kingswood High School on Saturday 20th September!

The GKR Karate State Titles were nothing short of inspiring, with every competitor giving their absolute best on the day. From the tiniest juniors nervously stepping onto the mat for the very first time to the experienced black belts showing years of skill and dedication, each performance was met with cheers, encouragement, and pride. It was clear that everyone had worked so hard leading up to this event, and that effort really shone through in every kata and kumite round.

What made the day so special wasn’t just the high level of karate on display, but the determination and spirit shown by every single competitor. Whether they walked away with a medal or not, the courage it took to stand up, perform, and push themselves was something to admire. You could see the focus and heart in every performance, and it was obvious just how much time and effort had gone into preparing for the day. Coaches, family, and friends couldn’t have been prouder.

The atmosphere throughout the titles was one of encouragement and community. Competitors supported one another, celebrated each other’s achievements, and created friendships that went well beyond the mats. It was a true reminder that karate is about more than competition—it’s about respect, growth, and supporting one another along the journey.

At the end of the day, everyone who stepped onto the floor was a winner. Each competitor walked away with more experience, more confidence, and memories they’ll carry with them long after the event. The GKR Karate NSW State Titles were not only a showcase of talent and hard work, but also a celebration of the spirit of karate—and everyone who took part should feel incredibly proud of themselves.

The Northern Regional Tournament was held at Sedbergh Sports & Leisure Centre on Saturday 12th July 2025.

A message from the Tournament Director – Sensei James Gabbitas:

Our latest tournament, held on July 12th at the Sedbergh Sports and Leisure Centre in Bradford, was an unforgettable day and a landmark moment for our community. With over 200 competitors taking part, it was officially the largest tournament we’ve hosted in the past 10 years — a true reflection of the growth, dedication, and enthusiasm within our zone.

The day kicked off with our senior and junior team events, bringing everyone together in support of their regional teams. The energy in the hall was electric as competitors and spectators rallied behind their teammates, setting the tone for a day filled with unity, spirit, and sportsmanship.
One of the standout milestones of this event was the official introduction of mixed gender team kata — a progressive step that promotes flexibility and teamwork, making it easier for team members to train and grow together.

Across all grades and categories, the level of karate on display was nothing short of exceptional. Whether you left with a medal or not, the benefits of preparing and training for this event were clear — your karate will have improved greatly through the process. Every competitor should be proud of their progress and performance.

We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to all officials, referees, and volunteers whose hard work and professionalism ensured the tournament ran smoothly, fairly, and on time. Your dedication behind the scenes made the day the success it was.

Finally, a huge thank you to all competitors, Instructors, and supporters. The respect, sportsmanship, and positivity on display — win or lose — made for a truly special atmosphere. We’re proud of everyone who took part and look forward to even greater things to come!

On Saturday 7th June, competitors from across the Central Zone gathered in Walsall for an action-packed day of karate competition – and it did not disappoint!
The day began at 9am, with all 8 rings coming to life as Junior Teams kicked things off on Ring 2, followed by some fantastic individual performances in the junior divisions.
At 10am, all eyes turned to the prestigious Senior Black Belt Open events. The male division saw Andrew Jones and Mike Barrett claim gold in Kata and Kumite, while the female division witnessed Chloe Pedley win the Kata gold and Alex Holmes win gold in Kumite!

The juniors stepped up next, with Morgan Grew taking gold in both Kata and Kumite for the male division, while Sasha Davies did the same for the female competitors.
From the first junior rounds to the final team events, the atmosphere was outstanding, filled with sportsmanship, skill, and plenty of cheering from the crowd. It was a day to remember, showcasing some of GKR’s best karate-ka from across the Midlands.
