In 1973 Aunty Margaret began teaching her family style of Lomi Lomi. One of her first three students was Tamara Conlan Mondragon, who apprenticed with Aunty Margaret at her home in Captain Cook, Hawaii. Tamara feels honored to have received such pure knowledge directly from the source. Licensed since 1974, Tamara has shared Lomi Lomi with many friends and clients. She is now pleased to share this loving, healing massage with you.

Lomi Lomi is an ancient healing art practiced by Hawaiians. Typically, a tutu (grandmother) or other respected family member practices this healing art. The various styles of lomi lomi massage vary from one family to another.  Traditionally, the massage is done with the receiver laying on the floor or ground on a hand-woven mat.  The massage is done with the therapist standing and massaging with the feet (known as "walking the body") or kneeling utilizing finger, palm and elbow strokes.  Kukui nut, macadamia nut and coconut oils are used as lubricants and nutritional moisturizers during the massage.

According to Dr. Andrews, the director of the Napa Valley School of Massage, there were originally many "styles" of lomi lomi. Every extended family had someone skilled in lomi lomi bodywork. The Napa Valley School of Massage teaches the three most popular "styles" of Hawaiian lomi lomi.

The three most significant styles of Lomi Lomi are:

  1. "Walking the body" style of Lomi Lomi
  2. Professor Okazaki's style of Lomi Lomi
  3. Aunty Margaret's style of Lomi Lomi

"Hawaiian martial arts and healing have been linked together for centuries. In the 1920's, Hawaiian jiu jitsu teacher, Professor Henry S. Okazaki preserved a style of lomi lomi. As a physician and martial art teacher, it is my privilege to share this outstanding lomi lomi massage routine with you. I look forward to helping you with your education in Hawaiian Lomi Lomi." Daniel E. Andrews III, M.D. - Director, The Napa Valley School of Massage.

This DVD is a "must have" for students and practitioners of Hawaiian Lomi Lomi.

Lomi lomi massage is traditionally started with a prayer. The following is an example of a Hawaiian prayer:

E aloha mai
E mana mai
E pono mai
E ola no! Amama, ua noa.

Let there be love
Let there be power
Let there be harmony
Let there be healing!

So be it, it is done.

The first style of lomi lomi is done by "walking the body."  This method in Hawaiian is known as "A'e".  In this style of massage, the practitioner walks on the person receiving the massage.  When "walking the body" is done outside, it is not uncommon to use a low tree branch for balance. Inside the house, the lomi lomi practitioner uses a metal bar attached to the ceiling, a wooden staff or the backs of several side chairs for balance.  The "walking the body" style of Hawaiian lomi lomi is most useful when a small therapist needs to apply deep pressure on a large person or when the therapist is tired.

Techniques of Hawaiian Lomi Lomi.

The second style of lomi lomi taught at the Napa Valley School of Massage was preserved by the late Hawaiian jiu jitsu teacher, Henry S.Okazaki. Professor Okazaki's style of lomi lomi is done almost entirely with the elbow. This style of lomi lomi is often referred to as "Restorative Massage" since it has such a positive effect on health. It is remarkable that Professor Okazaki, in addition to preserving a style of lomi lomi, also passed on to his students techniques of the Hawaiian martial art known as "Lua". This Hawaiian martial art had elements of karate and jiu jitsu. In fact, Lua was known as a "bone breaking" martial art. The name "Lua" refers to the number "two". In other words, Hawaiian warriors were once trained to "harm or heal." They were both fighters and healers. Knowledge of treating injuries such as fractures and dislocations was very valuable to these warriors. It is interesting that these "gentle" warriors who practiced lua and lomi lomi are also credited with inventing the hula. Female kahuna lomi lomi treated a variety of internal disorders and assisted with childbirth.  Upset stomach in children is known as "huli stomach" and was effectively treated by a skilled family member trained in lomi lomi.In addition to kneading tissues, lomi lomi bodywork utilizes various baths including hot steam baths and ocean water treatments. Also used by kahuna are herbs, salt and clay body treatments. Some kahuna are specialized in religious and spiritual ceremonies known in Hawaiian as "huna". All these treatment modalities are designed to heal dis-ease and restore health.

The the third style of Hawaiian lomi lomi, taught at the Napa Valley School of Massage, is the Aunty Margaret style of lomi lomi. Seminars on the Aunty Margaret style of lomi lomi are taught by renowned lomi lomi author and teacher, Tamara Mondragon. She has written many authoritative articles and is the creator of the first video series on lomi lomi (see below).
