Lomi Lomi is an ancient healing art practiced by Hawaiians. Typically, a tutu (grandmother) or other respected family member practices this healing art. The various styles of lomi lomi massage vary from one family to another. Traditionally, the massage is done with the receiver laying on the floor or ground on a hand-woven mat. The massage is done with the therapist standing and massaging with the feet (known as "walking the body") or kneeling utilizing finger, palm and elbow strokes. Kukui nut, macadamia nut and coconut oils are used as lubricants and nutritional moisturizers during the massage.
According to Dr. Andrews, the director of the Napa Valley School of Massage, there were originally many "styles" of lomi lomi. Every extended family had someone skilled in lomi lomi bodywork. The Napa Valley School of Massage teaches the three most popular "styles" of Hawaiian lomi lomi.
The three most significant styles of Lomi Lomi are:
- "Walking the body" style of Lomi Lomi
- Professor Okazaki's style of Lomi Lomi
- Aunty Margaret's style of Lomi Lomi

Lomi lomi massage is traditionally started with a prayer. The following is an example of a Hawaiian prayer:
E aloha mai
E mana mai
E pono mai
E ola no! Amama, ua noa.
Let there be love
Let there be power
Let there be harmony
Let there be healing!
So be it, it is done. |
| The first style of lomi lomi is done by "walking the body." This method in Hawaiian is known as "A'e". In this style of massage, the practitioner walks on the person receiving the massage. When "walking the body" is done outside, it is not uncommon to use a low tree branch for balance. Inside the house, the lomi lomi practitioner uses a metal bar attached to the ceiling, a wooden staff or the backs of several side chairs for balance. The "walking the body" style of Hawaiian lomi lomi is most useful when a small therapist needs to apply deep pressure on a large person or when the therapist is tired. |
